Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, in her June 24, 2010 legislative briefing, stated that she hopes the House will pass a supplemental military appropriation of $33.5 billion before adjourning for the July 4th holiday. But not all Democrats are comfortable with the measure at a time their constituents are clamoring to end deficit spending. According to the Center for Defense Information, by the end of fiscal year 2010 the Iraq and Afghanistan wars will have cost $1.08 trillion.

Debate Over Funding the War

Although Speaker Pelosi dismissed any link between the recent dismissal of General Stanly McCrystal and the “emergency” war appropriation, Kate Hunter, writing in Roll Call (June 24, 2010), comments that liberals are seeking a delay on the vote “until ‘serious questions and concerns’ about the war in Afghanistan that were raised in an explosive Rolling Stone article have been addressed.”

Addressing the House Committee on Appropriations June 24, 2010, Ranking Republican Jerry Lewis blasted the Democrats for holding up the war funding measure. “We have barely one week left before the 4th of July recess,” he said. “There is little evidence that the House will take any action to provide General Petraeus and our troops the tools they need to be successful.”
