Health Minister Deb Matthews Proposes to Cut Generic Drug Costs by 50%
Ontario’s pharmacists currently receive $750 million from generic drug manufacturers to stock their products. Under proposed legislation, Health Minister Deb Matthews wants to eliminate the money. To compensate pharmacies, a $150 million fund will be established, including $100 million to compensate those willing to offer professional services such as flu shots. In comments published by the Canadian Press Matthews sold the plan as a way to reduce emergency room wait times: “If they’re taking pressure off our family doctors, if they’re taking pressure off emergency rooms, then we want to compensate them for that.”
