A large amount of wildlife funding comes from sporting and conservation organizations. These organizations have many members, they are well funded, and they have strong political connections. The organizations are constantly at odds to gain an upper hand on how wildlife resources should be utilized. They agree on animal population management, but their strategies differ.
Wildlife Usage
Human usage of wildlife varies greatly, from the active takings of animals for food or sport to the passive enjoyment of organism observation. In order to maintain the gamut of activities that are associated with wildlife and the outdoors in general, financial funding is essential.
Wildlife Habitats and Refuges
In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt initiated the provisions for national wildlife refuges, with the establishment of Pelican Island Refuge in Florida’s Indian River to protect the brown pelican. Since that time, over 500 refuges have been established, comprising over 92 million acres, which are predominately waterfowl habitats. The Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Act of 1934 established the means to provide funds for the acquisition, maintenance, and development of waterfowl refuges.
