By the middle of the 19th century, New York City was well on its way to turning the trio of the world’s greatest cities, Amsterdam, London and Paris, into a quartet. New York City, had become the economic and entertainment capital of the country by then. New York City, or as its residents referred to it, “the City”, led by being better than, if not the best of, the rest of the United States of America.

If I Can Make It There - New York, New York - I’ll Make It Anywhere

A week before he was to be sworn in as 16th President of the United States on March 4, 1861 Abraham Lincoln returned to the scene where he’d delivered his famous “Founding Fathers” speech at Cooper Union in New York City on February 27, 1860. Lincoln himself credited the oration and the image altering “dignified public figure” photograph taken at Mathew Brady’s Broadway studio for getting him elected. When he revisited the City in February 1861, he’d changed dramatically from his initial stay there in February 1860; the new Lincoln was bearded and confident as the President-elect.

However, if he thought he’d be welcomed with open arms, he was mistaken. While he garnered 53 percent of the vote in New York State he’d received only 34 percent of New York City’s vote. Truth be told he would never quite get how to have a relationship with the most important city of his sacrosanct National compact. More often than not, he’d find himself shaking his head in wonder at the ability of the people of New York City “to change horses in mid-stream” if needed to survive and/or if necessary to succeed, when it came to their way of life.
